The first buyers of the iPhone Duo have encountered a serious device failure. The inner flexible displays began breaking during initial setup or just hours after unboxing.

Almost all affected users describe the same scenario: when they try to unfold the phone, they hear a distinct crunch or click, after which a deep crack appears along the fold line in the lower-right part of the screen.

Apple representatives confirmed they are aware of the inner display defect. However, the company says the problem is not widespread and has affected only a small number of devices from the first batch. Apple has not yet identified the cause, but engineers at iFixit scanned the mechanism and found a possible source of the problem.

iPhone Duo screen cracks along the fold

It turned out that the edges of several rigid internal components meet in the area where the teardrop-shaped hinge folds. When the phone is closed, a slight manufacturing defect prevents the central metal support plate from sinking deep enough. As a result, it presses against the thin OLED panel from the inside, damaging the screen as the phone folds.

Apple advises owners of affected devices to contact support. Service centers classify the defect as a warranty issue and replace the phone with a new one free of charge. However, device shortages have left stocks limited, so some buyers have to wait their turn for a replacement.
