Valve continues work on NVIDIA GPU support in SteamOS. The driver has already been merged into the system’s main development branch, enabling certain generations of GeForce GPUs to initialize and output video.

Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffé told IGN in an interview. According to him, NVIDIA support remains one of the company’s key priorities, and the team responsible for it continues to grow.

The main issue now relates to performance. A noticeable gap still exists between the current driver implementation in SteamOS and modern NVIDIA drivers. Therefore, Valve does not currently recommend using SteamOS on computers with GeForce.

In June, Valve announced an expansion of the team responsible for NVIDIA compatibility. However, the company does not expect full support for most GeForce graphics cards by 2026.

Compatibility expansion will enable installing SteamOS on a wider range of gaming PCs. Currently, Valve’s own devices are optimized for AMD graphics. For example, the Steam Deck uses a hybrid processor AMD, while the Steam Machine is equipped with a discrete GPU AMD.

NVIDIA has not yet announced exact timelines for full support.
