Valve discontinues Index VR headset and discounts remaining stock
Valve has discontinued the Index VR headset, which had been in production since 2019. The company is selling off its remaining devices and accessories at a 20% discount. The announcement appeared on October 14 on Steam’s hardware page.
New prices and availability
According to PC Gamer, the full Valve Index kit with controllers and base stations, which previously cost $999, is no longer available. Individual headset components are still available at a discount.

| Replacement cable | $129 | $103,20 |
| Right controller | — | Out of stock |
| Base stations | — | Out of stock |
| Full Valve Index kit | $999 | Out of stock |
The prices listed are for the US Steam store. In Germany, the headset is available for €431,20. Accessory availability varies by region: for example, both controllers are still available in the UK, while the right controller is already out of stock in the US.
Support and successor
Despite discontinuing production, Valve confirmed that Index will continue to be supported on Steam and SteamVR. Headset owners can still contact Steam Support, and existing warranty coverage remains in effect.

Index production ended shortly after the release of Steam Frame. The new headset differs significantly from its predecessor: it runs on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, supports standalone gaming, and can stream video wirelessly from a PC.
Steam Frame uses built-in cameras to track movement, while Index requires external base stations. However, Valve has not said that discontinuing Index is related to reallocating resources in favor of Steam Frame.
