
NVIDIA officially adds DLSS 5 for GeForce RTX 40
NVIDIA confirmed that DLSS 5 will be available on GeForce RTX 40 graphics cards. Currently, the technology officially works only on RTX 50.
When will support be available
NVIDIA representative Rajal Maharaj told The Verge that the company first wants to further optimize DLSS 5 for the Blackwell architecture, which underpins the RTX 50 series graphics cards.
In autumn, NVIDIA plans to release further optimizations for the technology. After that, DLSS 5 adaptation will begin for the previous generation of graphics cards. The company has not yet specified either the release date or the list of compatible models RTX 40.
Why optimization is required
DLSS 5 places a significant load on the graphics card. In TechSpot’s tests with NBA 2K27 at 4K resolution, frame rates on RTX 5090 dropped from 192 to 76 FPS after enabling the technology, while on RTX 5080 they fell from 185 to 53 FPS.

At the same time, NVIDIA has already accelerated DLSS 5 by approximately five times compared to the early version, which required two RTX 5090 GPUs.
How DLSS 5 works
DLSS 5 debuted on September 3 in NBA 2K27. The technology is based on 3D-Guided Neural Rendering.
Unlike Super Resolution and Frame Generation, DLSS 5 does not increase resolution or generate intermediate frames. The neural network processes the final image and can modify lighting, shadows, skin, hair, vegetation, and other scene elements using data from the game engine.
At the same time, DLSS 5 can operate simultaneously with Super Resolution, Multi Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction.
NVIDIA has not yet confirmed support for GeForce RTX 30 and RTX 20. Enthusiasts have run an early version of DLSS 5 on older graphics cards, but this significantly reduced performance.
