Microsoft updated the Surface Laptop 13 – up to 18 hours without charging
Microsoft has unveiled the Surface Laptop 13 (2nd Edition). The laptop retains its previous design but has switched to a new Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Plus processor, features a brighter display, and offers improved performance from its NPU.
Display and chassis
The Surface Laptop 13 is equipped with a 13-inch PixelSense touchscreen featuring 1920×1280 pixels, a density of 178 ppi, a 3:2 aspect ratio, and a refresh rate of up to 60 Hz. Maximum brightness has increased by 25% and now reaches 500 nits.
The chassis is made of aluminum. The laptop weighs 1.23 kg and, like its predecessor, operates without a fan.
Performance
Inside is a 6-core Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Plus with integrated Adreno graphics and an NPU Hexagon processor delivering 80 TOPS.
According to Microsoft tests, the Surface Laptop 13 (2nd Edition) is up to 17% faster than its predecessor in office tasks. Graphics performance increased by more than 60%, and local AI inference on NPU accelerated to 95%. Results were obtained from internal Microsoft tests and depend on the specific workload.
Memory and storage
The Surface Laptop 13 is offered with 16 or 24 GB of LPDDR5x RAM. Removable UFS storage drives are available in 256 and 512 GB capacities.
The base configuration combines 16 GB of RAM and a 256 GB storage drive. Versions with 16/512 GB and 24/512 GB are also available. The removable storage design simplifies replacement during maintenance and repair.
Battery life
Microsoft claims up to 22.5 hours of local video playback and up to 18 hours of web browsing. For comparison, the first-generation Surface Laptop 13 was rated for up to 23 hours of local video and up to 16 hours of web surfing. Thus, battery life in the browser has increased by two hours, while the claimed figure for local video playback has slightly decreased.
The laptop charges via USB-C. In the US, a 45 W adapter is included in the box. In EU countries, the power supply may not be included with the device and may be sold separately.
Ports and camera
The chassis features two USB-C ports supporting USB 3.2, one USB-A 3.2 port, and a 3.5-mm audio jack. Wireless connectivity is provided via Wi-Fi 7.
Above the screen is a front-facing camera supporting Full HD 1080p video.
Prices and release date
Sales of the Surface Laptop 13 (2nd Edition) will begin on October 13 in select markets. Pre-orders are now open. The laptop is available in platinum, black, and purple colors. Black was introduced in this generation.
In the United States, prices are:
- 16 GB RAM + 256 GB UFS – $1200;
- 16 GB RAM + 512 GB UFS – $1300;
- 24 GB RAM + 512 GB UFS – $1500.
In Europe, for example in Austria, the same configurations cost €1319, €1439 and €1679 respectively. The power adapter in the European Microsoft Store is sold separately for €59,99.
