Microsoft unveiled the Surface Pro 12 (2nd Edition) tablet

Microsoft unveiled the Surface Pro 12 (2nd Edition) with a six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus processor, a 12-inch touchscreen with refresh rates up to 90 Hz, and up to 24 GB of RAM.

Display and chassis

The Surface Pro 12 is equipped with a 12-inch PixelSense touchscreen LCD display featuring 2196×1464 pixels, a pixel density of 220 ppi, and a 3:2 aspect ratio. The refresh rate reaches 90 Hz, although the default mode is set to 60 Hz.

Maximum brightness is 500 nits, which is 25% higher than the 400 nits of the previous generation. Contrast also increased from 1300:1 to 1400:1.

The tablet weighs 686 grams with dimensions of 274×190×7,8 mm and features a fanless cooling system. The chassis is made of 86% recycled materials, including fully recycled aluminum alloy.

Microsoft added a new black color option while retaining platinum and purple finishes. The back of the device features a magnetic mount for the Surface Slim Pen with wireless charging.

Processor and memory

The Surface Pro, 12-inch (2nd Edition) is powered by a 6-core Snapdragon X2 Plus. Graphics are handled by the integrated Qualcomm Adreno, while AI computations use NPU Qualcomm Hexagon with performance up to 80 TOPS.

According to internal Microsoft tests, compared to the first Surface Pro 12, the new tablet delivers up to 17% higher performance in office tasks. Graphics performance increased by more than 60%, and local AI inference on NPU accelerated to 95%. Real-world results depend on specific workloads and configurations.

Consumer versions of the Surface Pro 12 are offered with 16 or 24 GB of LPDDR5x RAM and a UFS storage drive of 256 or 512 GB.

Cameras and Connectivity

For video calls, a front-facing Surface Studio Camera with Full HD 1080p resolution is provided. A 10-megapixel Ultra HD camera is installed on the rear panel.

The connector set includes two USB-C ports supporting USB 3.2. For wireless connectivity, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 are provided. Windows Hello supports sign-in via facial recognition.

For corporate clients, Microsoft will also release the Surface Pro 12 with 5G support. This version runs Windows 11 Pro, weighs 707 grams, and supports Nano-SIM and eSIM. For business models, storage up to 1 TB is also available.

Surface Pro 12 is compatible with the Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard and Surface Slim Pen, which are sold separately.

The new tablet comes preinstalled with the Microsoft Ink Canvas app for pen-based work. It enables sketching and annotations, as well as using AI to generate images and create text summaries. AI features in Ink Canvas require a compatible Microsoft 365 subscription.

Battery

Microsoft claims up to 15.5 hours of local video playback and up to 13 hours of active web browsing for the Wi-Fi version. The first Surface Pro 12 achieved up to 16 and 12 hours, respectively. Thus, the claimed battery life while using a browser has increased by one hour, while local video playback time has decreased by 30 minutes.

The corporate version with 5G, when connected to a mobile network, is rated for up to 13 hours of video playback and up to 10 hours of web browsing.

The tablet charges via USB-C. The power adapter is not included in the box. The consumer version is compatible with USB-C adapters rated from 27 W, and Microsoft separately offers a proprietary 45 W charger.

Release dates and price

Pre-orders for the Surface Pro, 12-inch (2nd Edition) are now open in the United States. Sales begin on October 13. The keyboard and Surface Slim Pen are sold separately.
