Honor introduces Magic 9 and 9 Pro Max camera phones

Honor has officially unveiled its flagship Magic 9 and Magic 9 Pro Max smartphones. Both models feature an updated design, high-capacity batteries, and a camera system developed in collaboration with German professional cinema equipment manufacturer ARRI.

Honor Magic 9 Pro Max

The Magic 9 Pro Max is the first model with the Pro Max suffix in the Honor lineup. The smartphone features an all-metal body with a redesigned camera module, the design of which is inspired by the classic ARRI ARRIFLEX 35 cinema camera.

The new device features a 6.8-inch Black Diamond LTPO OLED display with a resolution of 2868 × 1320 pixels and an adaptive refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz. Local peak brightness reaches 10,000 nits, while the maximum brightness in HBM mode is 2,000 nits. The PWM dimming frequency reaches 4,320 Hz, and the screen bezels are 0.98 mm wide. Dolby Vision and HDR Vivid are also supported.

The display is protected by NanoCrystal Shield glass with an anti-reflective coating made of 5,600 layers of silicon nitride. According to Honor, the light reflection coefficient has been reduced to 1.5%, scratch resistance has been increased by 15 times, and drop resistance by 25 times.

The smartphone is powered by a 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor with a maximum clock speed of 5 GHz and Adreno 850 graphics. Configurations are available with 12 GB or 16 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage with a capacity of 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB.

Cameras

The main camera of the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max includes three components:

200 MP main camera with an OmniVision OV52A sensor in 1/1,28 inch format, f/1.57 aperture, and optical image stabilization OIS;
50 MP ultra-wide camera with an f/2.0 aperture;
200 MP periscope telephoto camera with a 1/1,4-inch sensor, f/2.6 aperture, 3.5× optical zoom, and OIS.

The main and telephoto cameras are rated for CIPA 8.0-level stabilization efficiency. The main camera also supports angular vibration compensation of up to 3°.

The front panel features a 55 MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture and a 1:1 square image capture format. This design allows for shooting horizontal frames while holding the smartphone vertically. The front camera is complemented by a 3D facial recognition system.

Image processing is handled by the proprietary 6nm Honor Yuguang H1 chip. It supports RAW-domain noise reduction during video recording. The manufacturer claims an 8 dB improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio.

As part of the collaboration with ARRI, the smartphone features a professional video system with support for 10-bit color, the LogC3 logarithmic curve, and the ARRI Wide Gamut 3 (AWG3) color space. Cinematic mode recording is available at up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. Users have access to 14 pre-installed ARRI Looks color profiles and the ARRI Look Library, which includes 87 color grading options.

Additionally, an ARRI Cinema mode has been implemented with manual settings for ISO, shutter speed, white balance, focus, and stabilization. For audio recording, a directional microphone system is provided, including a built-in microphone with a narrow polar pattern.

Two external telephoto lenses are offered as additional accessories.

Honor G200 with an equivalent focal length of 200 mm, a length of 81 mm, and a weight of 88 grams;
Honor G500 with an equivalent focal length of 500 mm for shooting distant objects.

A dedicated camera grip and a professional video kit, developed in collaboration with SmallRig, are also available.

Battery and other features

The Honor Magic 9 Pro Max features an 8,800 mAh (typical) Qinghai Lake silicon-carbon battery with a silicon content of up to 40%. The energy density is rated at 1,000 Wh/L. It supports 100W wired charging, 80W wireless charging, and up to 50W in-car wireless charging with compatible chargers.

Connectivity is provided by a proprietary third-generation C3 radio frequency chip and a seven-component RF architecture. Support for up to 32 5G bands is claimed. The device features two nano-SIM slots and eSIM support with the ability to switch between profiles.

Other features include a 3D ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, a 3D facial recognition system, two 1216-format speakers, a dedicated camera button, and a programmable AI button. The device is water and dust resistant, meeting IP68, IP69, and IP69K standards.

The smartphone measures 161,64 × 76,98 × 8,59 mm and weighs 233 grams. It is available in three colors: Shadow Black, Silver, and Moss Green.

Honor Magic 9

The standard Magic 9 features a more compact body with a glass back panel and a 6.37-inch flat LTPS OLED display with a resolution of 2664 × 1236 pixels. The refresh rate reaches 120 Hz, local peak brightness is 10,000 nits, and maximum brightness in HBM mode is 2,000 nits. The PWM dimming frequency reaches 3,840 Hz. Hardware-based blue light reduction and a minimum brightness of 1 nit are also provided. The screen bezels are 0.95 mm wide.

The smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It features 12 GB or 16 GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Storage options include 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB.

Cameras

Unlike the Pro Max, the standard model uses different main sensors, although the camera resolution remains the same:

200 MP main camera with a 1/1,4-inch sensor, f/1.9 aperture, and optical image stabilization;
50 MP ultra-wide camera with an f/2.0 aperture;
200 MP periscope telephoto camera with a 1/1,56-inch sensor, f/2.6 aperture, 3.5× optical zoom, and OIS.

The main and telephoto cameras feature CIPA 7.5-level stabilization. The Magic 9 is also equipped with the proprietary Yuguang H1 image processing chip and supports ARRI video technologies, including LogC3, a library of 87 color profiles, and a Cinema Live mode with a 2.39:1 aspect ratio.

On the front, there is the same 55 MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture, a 1:1 square image format, and a horizontal shooting feature for when the smartphone is held vertically. To expand zoom capabilities, support for the external Honor G200 telephoto lens is provided.

Battery and other features

The silicon-carbon battery has a capacity of 8000 mAh. It supports 80W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.

A 3D ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is used for unlocking. There are also dedicated buttons for the camera and AI functions, a third-generation C3 radio frequency chip, and IP68, IP69, and IP69K ingress protection ratings.

The dimensions of the Honor Magic 9 are 151 × 72,28 × 8,49 mm, and it weighs 209 grams. The smartphone is available in four colors: yellow, white, black, and olive green.

Software and additional features

Both smartphones run MagicOS 11 based on Android 17. The updated YOYO AI assistant supports automated task execution, note-taking, summary generation, and calendar management.

It also includes file sharing features with compatible Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows devices via Honor Connect.
