Red Magic 12 Pro+ gets a 185 Hz display and active cooling
Red Magic has unveiled the Red Magic 12 Pro+ gaming smartphone, featuring a 185 Hz display, an 8,400 mAh battery, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip and a hybrid cooling system.
Design and display
The Red Magic 12 Pro+ is thinner and lighter than its predecessor. The smartphone retains a flat back with no protruding camera module, while its more rounded corners and metal frame with smooth edges make it more comfortable to hold in landscape mode. The body is 8.55 mm thick and weighs 223 grams.
The smartphone has a 6.85-inch BOE OLED display with a resolution of 2688×1216 pixels, a refresh rate of up to 185 Hz, a touch sampling rate of 500 Hz and an instantaneous sampling rate of up to 5,000 Hz. Peak local brightness reaches 5,000 nits, while the entire panel can reach a maximum brightness of 1,900 nits. It also features 2,592 Hz PWM dimming.
The bezels around the display are just 0.96 mm wide on all four sides. Thanks to ninth-generation under-display front-camera technology, the screen has no notches or holes.
A dedicated G1 chip handles image processing, while Magic Touch 4.0 is designed to improve touch-recognition accuracy and speed. The 185 Hz refresh rate is supported in more than 35 adapted games.
Processor and memory
The Red Magic 12 Pro+ is powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor. It is paired with the dedicated Red Core R5 gaming chip, which helps process graphics, upscale images and control gaming features.
The smartphone supports hardware ray tracing in compatible games, as well as simultaneous resolution and frame-rate upscaling to as high as 2K and 185 Hz. The CUBE 4.0 gaming engine is used to optimize performance.
The device comes with LPDDR5T RAM offering data-transfer speeds of up to 10,667 Mbps and UFS 4.1 Pro storage. Standard versions are available with 12 or 16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of storage.
A limited-edition Golden Saga model with 24 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage has also been announced.
Cooling system
Heat is dissipated by an upgraded ICE system that combines liquid cooling with an active fan and RGB lighting.
The system includes a Drive Wind 5.0 fan spinning at up to 25,500 rpm and rated IPX8 for water resistance. A dual-circuit liquid-cooling system covers the processor, battery and other heat sources. Coolant is circulated by a micropump with a pressure of 130 kPa and power consumption of 20 mW.
The system also uses a vapor chamber, composite liquid metal and graphene heat-dissipation elements. According to the manufacturer, combining these technologies allows heat to be dissipated more effectively during extended gaming sessions.
Cameras
The rear of the Red Magic 12 Pro+ has two cameras:
- A 50 MP main camera with a 1/1,56-inch sensor and optical image stabilization (OIS).
- A 50 MP ultra-wide camera.
A 16 MP front camera with an OmniVision sensor is located under the display.
Battery
The battery has a capacity of 8,400 mAh. The phone supports 120 W wired fast charging and 80 W wireless charging.
In one published test, the phone had 76% charge remaining after five hours of mixed use, including gaming, video playback and camera use. Actual battery life depends on usage and settings.
Bypass charging is also supported, allowing the phone to draw power directly from the adapter while gaming and reducing additional battery heat.
Software and connectivity
The Red Magic 12 Pro+ features symmetrical 1115E stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, an X-axis linear motor and two touch-sensitive shoulder triggers with a 700 Hz polling rate.
The smartphone retains a 3.5 mm audio jack for wired headphones. Other features include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, an infrared port, USB 3.2 Gen 2 and an ultrasonic under-display fingerprint scanner.
The body is rated IP68 and IP69 for water and dust resistance. The device runs Android 17 with RedMagic OS 12.
Price and release date
The Red Magic 12 Pro+ went on sale in China on October 15. The smartphone is available in three transparent color options: Dark Night, Silver Wing and Ice Blue.
Official prices in China:
- 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage – 6,999 yuan (≈ $1046);
- 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage – 7,999 yuan (≈ $1195);
- 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage – 8,999 yuan (≈ $1345).
The limited-edition Golden Saga model features forged carbon in its cooling system. Its price and exact release date have not yet been announced.
The international release date for the Red Magic 12 Pro+ and its official prices for the European market are also still unknown.
