The PlayStation 6 could cost more than $1000 due to the memory shortage
According to insider KeplerL2, the cost of RAM and the SSD for the upcoming PlayStation 6 already exceeds $680.
That is more than the current retail price of the standard PS5 in the US ($650), and does not include the processor, cooling system or other components.
PlayStation 6 cost
KeplerL2 posted the new figures on the NeoGAF forum. The insider did not specify the separate costs of the RAM and storage, or explain how the estimate was calculated.

Back in March 2026, the insider estimated the total cost of PS6 components at around $760. In June, KeplerL2 reported a $200 increase, bringing the estimated total to $960. Now, judging by the latest statement, RAM and NAND flash memory alone cost more than $680.
The main reason for the rising costs is said to be a shortage of DRAM and NAND memory, driven by strong demand from AI data centers.
According to KeplerL2, when development of processors for next-generation consoles began, GDDR7 was expected to cost around $3 per GB. But market conditions have changed, and memory has turned out to be significantly more expensive than initially expected.
How much memory will the PS6 have?
Previous leaks pointed to GDDR7 with a 160-bit bus. The most likely configuration is believed to be 30 GB of RAM, although the console’s architecture is reportedly capable of supporting up to 40 GB.

There has also been discussion of reducing the amount of RAM to cut costs. The SSD’s exact capacity remains unknown. The figures cited by the insider, $680, do not make it possible to determine the final memory configuration, since the costs of GDDR7 and the storage drive have not been broken down.
PlayStation 6 price
With component costs rising, Wccftech suggests that the PS6’s retail price could exceed $1000. However, this forecast is currently based solely on estimates from an insider.
Moreover, component costs are not the same as the retail price. Sony may offset some manufacturing expenses with revenue from game and subscription sales. It is also unclear how closely current market prices for memory reflect the terms of the company’s purchasing contracts.
As of April 2, 2026, the standard PlayStation 5 officially costs €650 in Europe, while the PS5 Pro costs €900. Meanwhile, the unofficial price of the PlayStation 5 Pro ahead of the release of GTA 6 could reach €2000.
Sony has yet to announce the final PlayStation 6 specifications or its release date. Leaks point to late 2027, but this timing has not been officially confirmed.
