Sudo SP-01 music player unveiled with iPod-inspired design
Startup New Matter has introduced the Sudo SP-01, a compact music player inspired by classic iPods. The developers created the device for one clear purpose: to listen to music without being distracted by endless smartphone notifications.
Design and controls
Visually, the Sudo SP-01 almost entirely replicates the proportions and shape of Apple’s legendary players from the 2000s. The device’s body with rounded corners is machined from a single piece of aluminum, making it resemble modern MacBooks. The dimensions of the new device are just 103,5 × 58,6 × 8,5 mm.

The main control feature is the signature physical scroll wheel (tactile wheel) on the front panel, designed for switching tracks. However, unlike the original iPod, the top half of the body is occupied by a 2.73-inch touch-sensitive LCD screen with a resolution of 320 × 320 pixels. Primary menu navigation is handled via the touchscreen, while the wheel manages playback.
Technical specifications
The player is equipped with 64 GB of internal storage. For audiophiles with large lossless collections, there is a microSD card slot supporting up to 1 TB. The device features a full 3.5mm audio jack for wired headphones, as well as a Bluetooth module for connecting wireless headsets and speakers.

The device runs on the proprietary closed Sudo OS. The player supports both local file playback from memory and streaming services. The developers have not yet disclosed the exact list of supported music platforms. The claimed battery life is over 20 hours. A USB-C port is used for charging.
Release date and price
The expected retail price of the Sudo SP-01 is $249. At the moment, the startup New Matter has opened reservations for the first batch: this requires a refundable deposit of $50.
Shipments are scheduled to begin at the end of the fourth quarter of 2027. Residents of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand will be the first to receive the device. For other regions, a waitlist is available.
