Sony has started sending users unexpected notifications. PlayStation 5 owners in the US who aren’t using their consoles are being offered a trade-in, with payment sent directly to their bank accounts.

How does it work?

The notifications are sent through the official PlayStation App. Sony itself doesn’t handle the collection or assessment of devices; the program’s partner is Back Market, a marketplace specializing in refurbished electronics.

Sony PS5 Trade-in

To receive the maximum amount of $400 stated in the notifications, gamers must meet a number of strict requirements. The offer applies to the standard PS5 with a disc drive. The package must include two original DualSense controllers.

The console and controllers must be in perfect working and cosmetic condition (Grade 0). If a device is damaged, shows signs of wear, or is missing the second controller, the offer may be lower. The preliminary online valuation is confirmed once Back Market specialists receive and inspect the equipment.

Why Sony is doing this

Console makers rarely reach out to owners of devices that aren’t being used. Analysts link the move to current market conditions. New consoles have become significantly more expensive, and the PS5 Pro is in short supply. Refurbished used consoles could offer a cheaper alternative for a new audience.

Additionally, the upcoming release of GTA VI could boost interest in gaming platforms. Sony may be looking to bring unused hardware back into circulation so new customers join its ecosystem and start generating revenue through game purchases and PS Plus subscriptions.

Microsoft previously launched a similar campaign, offering owners of unused Xbox Series X and S consoles the chance to trade them in at Best Buy for up to $375 for a Series X or up to $200 for a Series S. The reward is issued as a Best Buy e-gift card.
