Apple is preparing one of the biggest redesigns of its laptops in recent years.

According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman and other sources, future high-end MacBooks with OLED displays will receive several notable changes. The devices may retain the MacBook Pro name or be released under a new MacBook Ultra brand.

Key changes

One of the main innovations will be the transition from mini-LED to OLED displays with a tandem two-layer structure. This design should provide deeper blacks, high contrast, increased brightness, and better energy efficiency.

For the first time on Mac computers, the displays will also support touch control. Apple is adapting the macOS 27 interface for finger input, although the system will still be primarily oriented toward the familiar combination of keyboard and trackpad.

Instead of the current “notch,” a Dynamic Island cutout is expected. Just like on the iPhone, it will be able to change size depending on the displayed interface elements and notifications.

Apple also plans to make the laptops thinner and significantly lighter. According to Gurman, the company has redesigned the internal layout, reducing the size of individual components and changing their placement. It is not yet known how much the thickness and weight of the 14- and 16-inch models will decrease.

The first models with OLED displays are expected to be based on the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max processors. Apple has reportedly decided to cancel the release of the M6 Pro and M6 Max and accelerate the transition to the M7 Pro and M7 Max, which will feature more powerful neural accelerators, improved graphics, and increased memory bandwidth. At the same time, the company is not canceling the base M6 processor.

When to expect them and how much they will cost

Apple is already testing the new laptops with a beta version of macOS 27.2. According to the latest information from Mark Gurman, their presentation could take place in October or November 2026.

OLED models are expected to be positioned higher in the lineup than current MacBook Pros. Exact pricing is not yet known. Gurman previously suggested that the transition to OLED and the new positioning could lead to a noticeable price increase.
