Apple explained why it delayed the release of the foldable iPhone Duo for so long

Apple did not want to release a foldable iPhone just to enter a new market for itself. After the presentation of iPhone Duo, company executives explained that they waited for the opportunity to create a device that truly meets Apple’s requirements for quality, design, and reliability.

Apple CEO John Ternus stated that the iPhone Duo allowed the company to rethink several aspects of the smartphone at once—from construction and design to software.

According to him, the hardware and software were developed as a unified system. As a result, Apple did not need to adapt an existing iPhone for a foldable form factor: the device was built almost from scratch.

Apple’s Senior Vice President of Marketing Greg Joswiak noted that existing foldable smartphones did not provide the company with sufficient grounds to rush the release of its own model.

Ternus separately criticized the flexible displays of some competitors. According to him, the plastic surface, visible screen unevenness, and tactile feel did not meet Apple’s standards. Rather than replicating existing solutions, the company decided to use the foldable format as an opportunity to create a smartphone in its own way.

Ternus also shared his first impressions after being appointed head of Apple. He admitted that he has spent about half of his life at the company, so he views the new role as both a great responsibility and a privilege.
