Apple has released the Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra chip and 512 GB of RAM

Apple has updated the Mac Studio, introducing a new generation of computers based on M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips.

Externally, the computer remains unchanged: Apple has retained the compact chassis familiar from previous generations. The main changes are focused internally – in performance, memory, and AI capabilities.

M5 Max

The M5 Max version features up to 18 CPU cores and up to 40 GPU cores, up to 128 GB of memory, and the combined memory bandwidth reaches 614 GB/s.

The graphics processor now includes neural accelerators, as well as third-generation hardware ray tracing. Mac Studio with M5 Max is designed for professional video editing, 3D graphics, and AI development. The media engine supports hardware acceleration for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and AV1, including 8K video processing.

According to Apple, in DaVinci Resolve Studio, the new Mac Studio is up to 3 times faster than the M4 Max model when using Magic Mask, and in Maxon Redshift, the rendering speed increase for scenes reaches 1.4 times.

M5 Ultra

The main new product is the M5 Ultra, which Apple calls its most powerful chip. It combines two M5 Max chips using UltraFusion technology and offers up to 36 cores CPU and up to 80 cores GPU. The combined memory capacity reaches 512 GB, and the bandwidth is 1.2 TБ/s. This allows working with large AI models directly on the computer without the need to send data to the cloud.

Compared to the M3 Ultra, Apple claims up to 1.3x higher performance CPU, up to 1.8x higher graphics performance, and up to 4.3x higher AI task performance. The M5 Ultra also received twice as many video encoding and decoding blocks as the M5 Max. Thanks to this, the Mac Studio can simultaneously play up to 33 streams of 8K ProRes 422 at 30 frames per second.

Connections and displays

The new Mac Studio is equipped with six Thunderbolt 5 ports, and also supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth reaches 120 Gbit/s. The computer can simultaneously work with eight displays, including up to four Studio Display XDR with 5K resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate.

Apple also provides the ability to combine multiple Mac Studio units into a computing cluster. According to the company, a cluster of four systems can deliver up to threefold performance gains in some AI tasks compared to a single computer.
