According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the initial reviews from people who managed to try out the foldable iPhone were predominantly positive. They especially liked how the smartphone fits in a pocket, as well as the feel of the hinge, its durability, and the new iPad-style app interfaces.

In the coming weeks, Apple is expected to hold its traditional autumn iPhone presentation. The exact date has not been announced yet, but September 9 is considered the most likely. The event is expected to feature iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the first foldable iPhone – the device is referred to as iPhone Ultra, although its final commercial name has not yet been confirmed.

Convenient format and durable hinge

According to Gurman, the foldable iPhone fits well in a pocket, and early users are giving positive feedback on the hinge feel and its durability. For a device with a flexible display, this is especially important, as Apple must prove that a foldable design will not turn the smartphone into an overly bulky compromise.

iPhone Ultra

The software component deserves separate attention. After unlocking, the user will gain access to a large internal screen. Users who have already tried the smartphone positively evaluated the new app interfaces in iPad style, adapted for the larger display area. The large screen also proved convenient as a camera viewfinder.

Disadvantages

At the same time, one of the main compromises for the iPhone Ultra could be its camera system. According to preliminary data, the smartphone will have only two main cameras and will remain without a dedicated telephoto module. For some users, this will not be a critical flaw, but given the expected price of over $2000, this solution may raise questions. Especially considering that telephoto cameras have long been used in flagship iPhone models.

It is expected that the foldable smartphone will receive a main 48-megapixel camera and an ultra-wide-angle module. In earlier leaks, both sensors were attributed with a resolution of 48 MP. Likely, Apple had to abandon a separate telephoto module due to limited internal space and the desire to make the chassis as thin as possible.

What will the foldable iPhone look like?

According to preliminary data, Apple will choose a book-like format similar to the smartphones of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series. The external screen will have a diagonal of approximately 5.5 inches, and the internal one will be about 7.8 inches.

iPhone Ultra Foldable

In the folded state, the device thickness will be approximately 9-9,5 mm, and in the unfolded state – about 4,5-4,8 mm. According to analyst Jeff Pu, the A20 Pro chip will be responsible for performance.

For biometric protection, Apple is expected to discontinue Face ID. Limited internal space given the very slim body thickness does not allow for the placement of the TrueDepth system. Instead, Touch ID will be used, embedded in the side power button.

Price

If preliminary estimates are confirmed, the iPhone Ultra will become one of Apple’s most expensive smartphones. The price is expected to exceed $2000, and versions with larger memory capacity may cost more than $2500. Against this backdrop, the lack of a telephoto camera can become a noticeable drawback. Buyers of a device in this class will expect the maximum set of features, despite limitations associated with the foldable design.
