Huawei unveiled the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design in China – a new generation of its foldable smartphones that fold into three.
The main change is a completely redesigned structure: instead of Z-shaped folding, it now uses a dual inward fold scheme, so the flexible screen no longer remains on the outside. Additionally, there is a separate external display, the Kirin 9050 Pro processor, and a version with hardware-based privacy protection for the screen.
Design and Displays
The Mate XT 2 folds using a G-shaped scheme: both sides of the flexible display retract into the chassis. Unlike the Mate XT and Mate XTs, a separate external screen is now provided for everyday use, so there is no need to unfold the smartphone for calls, messages, payments, and other daily tasks.
In the unfolded state, it uses a 10.2-inch LTPO OLED display with a resolution of 3184 × 2232 pixels, an aspect ratio of 12.8:9, and an adaptive refresh rate up to 120 Hz. The PWM frequency is 1440 Hz, and the touch sampling rate reaches up to 240 Hz.
The external 6.5-inch OLED display has a resolution of 2442 × 1140 pixels, a refresh rate up to 120 Hz, and a claimed peak brightness of up to 6500 nits. The screen is covered with Basalt Kunlun Glass.
For select configurations, a Lingdun Privacy Display mode is available with hardware-based viewing angle restrictions. It can be activated via a double tap; the image remains clearly visible from the front but becomes significantly harder to discern from the side.
Huawei states that the external glass is now 30 times more drop-resistant and 16 times more scratch-resistant, while the impact resistance of the internal flexible display has increased by 200%. The smartphone also becomes the first Huawei tri-camera device to receive IP58 and IP59 protection against dust and water.
The device thickness is 12.3 mm when folded. After fully unfolding, the three sections measure approximately 4.0, 3.69, and 3.5 mm in thickness respectively. The device weighs about 300 grams. Black, white, and purple color options are available.
Performance
The Mate XT 2 was the first to receive the Kirin 9050 Pro with the new LogicFolding architecture. Huawei states that the smartphone’s overall performance has increased by 42% compared to the Mate XTs. Single-core processor performance rose by 24%, multi-threaded performance by 52%, and Maleoon graphics rendering performance by 142%.
GPU supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing. The chip also includes NPU Da Vinci, designed for local execution of MoE models with a total parameter count up to 30 billion. All performance figures are currently based on Huawei data; independent tests for the Mate XT 2 have not yet been conducted.
All versions come with 16 GB of RAM. Storage capacity ranges from 256 GB to 2 TB, depending on the configuration.
Cameras
The main module includes three cameras:
- Main: 50 MP, RYYB sensor with 1/1,28-inch format, 23 mm equivalent focal length, optical image stabilization, and variable aperture f/1.49–f/4.0. Huawei claims a dynamic range of up to 18 EV.
- Ultra-wide: 40 MP, RYYB sensor, 13 mm equivalent focal length, f/2.2 aperture.
- Periscope: 50 MP, RYYB sensor, 81 mm equivalent focal length, f/2.2 aperture, optical image stabilization, and 3.5x optical zoom.
The Mate XT 2 also received the third-generation Red Maple camera for color analysis. According to Huawei, color reproduction accuracy has increased by 95% compared to the Mate XTs.
For selfies and video calls, two 8-MP cameras with an f/2.4 aperture are provided: one is located on the external display, the other on the internal display.
The main camera supports 4K video recording at 60 fps and slow-motion capture in 1080p up to 960 fps.
Battery and charging
Inside is a 5600 mAh battery. It supports 66W wired Huawei SuperCharge, up to 50W wireless charging, and 7.5W reverse wireless charging.
Software and connectivity
The smartphone runs HarmonyOS 7. The system is optimized for large screens. This allows three apps to be displayed simultaneously and uses an interface resembling a PC desktop.
The Mate XT 2 supports 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, an infrared transmitter, dual nanoSIMs, and eSIM. For wired connectivity, it uses a USB Type-C port with USB 3.1 Gen 1. It features stereo speakers, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and face unlock.
Satellite calls via Tiantong and messages via Beidou are also supported. Huawei states that the satellite connection speed has increased by 40%, and the probability of successful satellite paging has risen by 42% compared to the Mate XTs.
Among the additional features is ECG analysis. In China, this feature has received certification as a Class II medical device.
Prices and release date
Sales of the Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design in China will begin on September 12.

- 16 GB + 2 TB with Lingdun Privacy Display and stylus – 29,999 yuan ($4470).
The 2 TB version with a stylus is offered in purple. The M-Pen 3 Mini can be purchased separately for 1,199 yuan, or approximately $179. Huawei also includes the first devices with a case featuring a rotating stand. The release date for the international launch of the Mate XT 2 has not yet been announced.
