The next-generation Xbox, codenamed Project Helix, could become Microsoft’s most expensive gaming console. According to Fortune, the company is considering releasing the system in late 2028, with an estimated price of $1200-1,800.

Project Helix will combine Xbox and gaming PC features

Microsoft officially confirmed it was developing Project Helix in March 2026. The new console is being developed in collaboration with AMD and will be able to run both Xbox games and PC titles.

The system will be powered by a custom-designed AMD processor. Microsoft also promises a significant boost in ray-tracing performance and support for next-generation upscaling technologies.

Project Helix is designed to combine the capabilities of a gaming console and a PC. Unlike the Xbox Series X and Series S, the new system will be built to run not only console games but also PC titles.

Why the new Xbox will be expensive

According to Fortune, Microsoft’s internal forecasts put Project Helix’s retail price at $1200-1,800. However, the final price could be lower if the company decides to subsidize some of the device’s production costs.

That price is significantly higher than those of previous Xbox generations. This is likely because Project Helix is positioned as a premium gaming system that combines the capabilities of a console and a PC. High prices for RAM, storage, and modern semiconductor components are also contributing to the cost.

When will Project Helix launch?

According to Fortune, Microsoft is aiming to release Project Helix in time for the 2028 holiday season. That means late in the year, when manufacturers traditionally time new gaming hardware launches to coincide with Christmas sales.

A 2027 release for the console had been considered earlier. In February 2026, AMD CEO Lisa Su said development of the semiconductor platform for the new Xbox was on track to support a launch in 2027.

In addition, Fortune reports that the company plans to release a next-generation handheld gaming system in late 2027. It is not yet known whether Microsoft will develop the device itself or again enlist a third-party manufacturer, as it did with the ROG Xbox Ally.
